We received the question:

Dear Friend,

Thank you for your inquiry concerning "how to ward off the evil jinn or spirit or black magic."  I live in an African country where many people live in fear of evil spirits. People here have devised many ways to attempt to overcome the evil powers of darkness. Many wear charms or amulets containing Qur'anic verses to protect them from evil spirits. Many place fetishes in their homes, drink potions and make frequent visits to the marabouts ("holy" men). Some believe that if they say, "bi ism Allah" (in the Name of God) before entering a house or a car, they will be protected from accidents. Others pour out offerings to "personal protector spirits" in an attempt to ward off evil. But all these ideas come from men who ignore the Holy Scriptures of the Prophets---that is, the Word of God. What matters is this: What does the Word of the one true God have to say about protection from evil spirits?

God's Word teaches us that Satan and his demons are real and able to perform certain kinds of miracles. Evil spirits are powerful, but they are not all-powerful! The Holy Scriptures teach that we do not need to live in fear of these evil spirits if we listen to and obey God, who is infinitely more powerful than all evil jinn and black magic put together. The Lord God wants us to put our confidence in Him, not in religious rituals, or fetishes or men. Anything that replaces simple faith in the true and living God is an idol. Faith in special prayer formulas or charms or spiritual guides cannot give us victory over the devil---as a matter of fact, the devil often uses these very things to accomplish his evil purposes.

In the holy Injil we read, "Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes." (Ephesians 6:10,11). An important piece of the "armor of God" is "the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one." (Eph. 6:16)  The Scripture teaches us that it is only through faith in the living God and His Word that we can overcome the spiritual forces of evil. The most important question concerning faith is not: how much faith do you have, but who do you have faith in?? God's Word tells us that there is only One who can give us victory over evil spirits. Do you know who that One is? Yes, it is Jesus the holy son of Mary. He came from heaven, was born as a perfectly holy man; there was no sin in Him. The Holy Scriptures tells us that the reason Jesus appeared was "to destroy the devil's work." (Injil: 1 John 3:8) Jesus came to deliver us from our sins, from the power of the devil, and from eternal judgment. Jesus was more than just one of the prophets. He was the powerful, eternal Word of God who "became flesh and made his dwelling among us." (Injil: John 1:1-3,14). The Scripture says that the Lord "shared in [our] humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death---that is, the devil---and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death." (Injil: Heb. 2:14,15)

The Injil records many stories about how Jesus overcame evil spirits when He walked upon the earth. Here is one such account:

(Injil: Mark 5) 1 They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes. 2 When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3 This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. 4 For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5 Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. 6 When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7 He shouted at the top of his voice, "What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Swear to God that you won't torture me!" 8 For Jesus had said to him, "Come out of this man, you evil spirit!" 9 Then Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" "My name is Legion," he replied, "for we are many." 10 And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area. 11 A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12 The demons begged Jesus, "Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them." 13 He gave them permission, and the evil spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. 14 Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15 When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16 Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon possessed man–and told about the pigs as well. 17 Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region. 18 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19 Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you." 20 So the man went away and began to tell in the Ten Cities how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.

Yes, Jesus had authority and power over evil spirits and over every kind of power---Satan, sickness, nature, death---because He was the "Ruh Allah" (the Soul of God) and the "Kalimat Allah" (the Word of God) who came from heaven. That is why Jesus only had to speak the word and the evil spirits fled from the demon-possessed man. Today, Jesus is in heaven where
He possesses "all authority in heaven and on earth" (Injil: Matthew 28:18) Whoever believes in Him will never again need fear evil spirits. All of God's unlimited power resides in the Lord Jesus. Therefore, if you believe in Him and receive Him as your Savior and your Lord, you will no longer need to fear anything: not death, not life, not evil spirits, not witches, not the present, nor the future!  You will no longer need to wear charms or consult spiritual guides because the Lord Jesus will protect you. The Scripture says: "In [Jesus] Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority!" (Injil: Col. 2:9,10) Jesus Christ has conquered Satan, and in His name every form of evil can be overcome. There is power in the Name of Jesus. But before you can experience that power and deliverance you must believe in Him and receive Him as your Savior and Lord.

God wants us to trust in Jesus "who is the head over every power and authority" instead of trying to appease the lesser powers and authorities of this world.
God promises to give His Holy Spirit to all those who believe in Jesus as the all-sufficient Savior who came from heaven to die on a cross for our sins and to rise triumphantly over death three days later. And whoever has the Holy Spirit in his or her heart can claim this wonderful promise found in the Injil: "The One who is in you (the Holy Spirit of Jesus) is greater than the one who is in the world (Satan)." (1 John 4:4)

Let me close this letter by saying that I have several friends here in Africa who used to live in constant fear of evil spirits and black magic. But they no longer live in fear. They have been set free by the truth of God's Word. If you would like to hear their personal stories about how the Lord Jesus has delivered them and given them peace, let me know and I'll ask them to write out their testimonies for you.

If you have any further questions, feel free to write to me directly.
