Answering Islam - A Christian-Muslim dialog

Yeshua (Jesus) – the Name above all names!

Sam Shamoun

Since Muslims are fond of pointing to Song of Solomon 5:16 as a prophecy of Muhammad by name (an assertion which is thoroughly refuted in the following articles: 1, 2) we decided to examine the Hebrew Scriptures to see if whether Jesus’ Hebrew name Yeshua ever appears, and if so what significance this has on our understanding of the Person and work of Christ.

Yahweh (Jehovah) has become Yeshua (Jesus)

The Hebrew prophets often speak of Yahweh becoming salvation for his people:

“Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to Yahweh, saying, ‘I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. Yahweh is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation (lishu’a); this is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him.’” Exodus 15:1-2

“Yahweh is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation (lishu’a)… This is the gate of Yahweh; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation (lishu’a). The stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner. This is Yahweh's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” Psalm 118:20-23

“I will give thanks to you, O Yahweh, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you did comfort me. Behold, God is my salvation (el yashu’ati); I will trust, and will not be afraid; for Yah Yahweh is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation (lishu’a).” Isaiah 12:1-2

The inspired writers also hoped for and rejoiced in God’s salvation:

“I hope for your salvation (lishu'atekha), O Yahweh, and I do your commandments… I long for your salvation (lishu'atekha), O Yahweh, and your law is my delight.” Psalm 119:166, 174

“In that day they will say, ‘Surely this is our God; we trusted in him, and he saved us. This is Yahweh, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation (bishu'ato).” Isaiah 25:9

“O Yahweh, be gracious to us; we long for you. Be our Arm every morning, our salvation (yeshu'atenu) in time of distress.” Isaiah 33:2

What makes these passages rather amazing is that the word for salvation is Yeshua which, as we noted above, happens to be Jesus’ Hebrew name! Thus, according to these verses Yahweh becomes Yeshua or Jesus, and the people hope and rejoice for his Yeshua to come!

Moreover, the prophets further announced that as their Yeshua Yahweh redeems his people for his name’s sake by making atonement for their sins:

“See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.’ … Praise his people, O you nations; for he avenges the blood of his servants, and takes vengeance on his adversaries, and makes atonement for the land of his people.” Deuteronomy 32:43

“For thy name's sake, O Yahweh, pardon my guilt, for it is great.” Psalm 25:11

“When he slew them, they sought for him; they repented and sought God earnestly. They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God their redeemer. But they flattered him with their mouths; they lied to him with their tongues. Their heart was not steadfast toward him; they were not true to his covenant. Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity, and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often, and did not stir up all his wrath. He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes and comes not again.” Psalm 78:34-39

“Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for thy name's sake!” Psalm 79:9

“O Israel, hope in Yahweh! For with Yahweh there is steadfast love, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.” Psalm 130:7-8

This explains why the inspired authors affirm that forgiveness comes from calling on and/or believing in Yahweh’s name since he is the source of salvation and the only God that saves:

Salvation belongs to Yahweh; thy blessing be upon thy people! [Selah]” Psalm 3:8

“But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to thee; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to Yahweh!” Jonah 2:9

“Save me, O God, by thy name, and vindicate me by thy might.” Psalm 54:1

“‘You are my witnesses,’ says Yahweh, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am Yahweh, and besides me there is no savior… I, I am He who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins.’” Isaiah 43:10-11, 25

“Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, Yahweh? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me. Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: ‘To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’ Only in Yahweh, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed, all who were incensed against him. In Yahweh all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory.” Isaiah 45:21-25

“And it shall come to pass that all who call upon the name of Yahweh shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as Yahweh has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom Yahweh calls.” Joel 2:32

Yahweh is Salvation has come!

According to the inspired Christian Greek Scriptures Yahweh actually became the man Yeshua (Jesus) in order to save his people from their sins:

“But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel’ (which means, God with us).’” Matthew 1:20-23

It must stated that Yeshua is the abbreviated form of Yehoshua (Joshua), which means “Yahweh Saves/is Salvation” (*). This helps us understand the connection between Jesus’ name and his coming to save his people from their sins, i.e. Jesus is actually Yahweh God that saves!

This further explains why Jesus does what the Hebrew Scriptures says Yahweh can and shall do, namely make atonement for sin as well as justify and forgive all who call on and/or believe in his name:

“Then he said to them, ‘These are my words which I spoke to you, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.’ Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.’” Luke 24:44-47

“To him all the prophets bear witness that every one who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” Acts 10:43

“But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from law, although the law and the prophets bear witness to it, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has faith in Jesus.” Romans 3:21-26

“because, if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved. The scripture says, ‘No one who believes in him will be put to shame.’ For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and bestows his riches upon all who call upon him. For, ‘every one who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved.’” Romans 10:9-13

“But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.” Galatians 4:4-5

“But we see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have all one origin. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brethren… Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage. For surely it is not with angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.” Hebrews 2:9-11, 14-17

This also helps to put in perspective why Jesus is the Savior of the world and his name the only one that can actually save:

“So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, ‘Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?’ … Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman's testimony, ‘He told me all that I ever did.’ So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days. And many more believed because of his word. They said to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of your words that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.’” John 4:28-29, 39-42

“On the morrow their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest and Ca'iaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, ‘By what power or by what name did you do this?’ Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, ‘Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a cripple, by what means this man has been healed, be it known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by him this man is standing before you well. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but which has become the head of the corner. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.’” Acts 4:5-12

“In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins… And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son as the Savior of the world.” 1 John 4:9-10, 14

It even helps us understand why NT believers praised and magnified the name of Jesus,

“Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists undertook to pronounce the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, ‘I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches.’ Seven sons of a Jewish high priest named Sceva were doing this. But the evil spirit answered them, ‘Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?’ And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, mastered all of them, and overpowered them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. And this became known to all residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks; and fear fell upon them all; and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled/being magnified. Many also of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices.” Acts 19:13-18

“To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his call, and may fulfill every good resolve and work of faith by his power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

When the OT commands people to glorify and praise the name of Yahweh:

“Some boast of chariots, and some of horses; but we boast of the name of Yahweh our God.” Psalm 20:7

"Therefore in the east give glory to Yahweh ; in the coastlands of the sea, to the name of Yahweh, the God of Israel.” Isaiah 24:15

“For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says Yahweh of hosts.” Malachi 1:11

To praise the name of Jesus is to praise the name of Yahweh since Jesus is the name Yahweh took when he became flesh from the blessed virgin!

As Yahweh Jesus is the source of salvation (along with the Father and the Holy Spirit):

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made… He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came to his own, and his own received him not. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.” John 1:1-3, 10-14

“In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets; but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of his nature, upholding the universe by his word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,” Hebrews 1:1-3

“Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,” Hebrews 5:8-9

“awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds.” Titus 2:13-14

“Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours in the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ:” 2 Peter 1:1

And being Yahweh who became Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death is able to ransom innumerable lives, i.e. a number so great that it cannot be counted!

“For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45 – cf. Matthew 20:28

“And as they were eating, he took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take; this is my body.’ And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. And he said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly, I say to you, I shall not drink again of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.’” Mark 14:22-25 – cf. Matthew 26:24-29; Luke 22:19-20

“and they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy art thou to take the scroll and to open its seals, for thou wast slain and by thy blood didst ransom men for God from every tribe and tongue and people and nation, and hast made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on earth.’” Revelation 5:9-10

“After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!’ And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, ‘Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen.’ Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, ‘Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?’ I said to him, ‘Sir, you know.’ And he said to me, ‘These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night within his temple; and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” Revelation 7:9-17

Otherwise, if Jesus were just a man he wouldn’t be able to redeem a single life – let alone a host so large that it can’t be numbered! – since only God is able to offer a high enough ransom price that satisfies his justice and holiness so as to save man:

Truly no man can ransom himself, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of his life is costly, and can never suffice, that he should continue to live on for ever, and never see the Pit. Yea, he shall see that even the wise die, the fool and the stupid alike must perish and leave their wealth to others. Their graves are their homes for ever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they named lands their own. Man cannot abide in his pomp, he is like the beasts that perish. This is the fate of those who have foolish confidence, the end of those who are pleased with their portion. [Selah] Like sheep they are appointed for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; straight to the grave they descend, and their form shall waste away; Sheol shall be their home. But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. [Selah]” Psalm 49:7-15

Christ is also the same Yahweh whom Psalm 118:22 says is the stone that the builders rejected and yet became the head of the corner:

“He had still one other, a beloved son; finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants, and give the vineyard to others. Have you not read this scripture: ‘The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” Mark 12:6-11

“Come to him, to that living stone, rejected by men but in God's sight chosen and precious; and like living stones be yourselves built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and he who believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you therefore who believe, he is precious, but for those who do not believe, ‘The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner,’ and ‘A stone that will make men stumble, a rock that will make them fall’; for they stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.” 1 Peter 2:4-8

Therefore, in the person of Christ Yahweh literally became Yeshua (Jesus) in order to redeem his people from their sins!

Yeshua – A Sign of the One to come

The Holy Bible refers to a high priest named Joshua who was appointed by God to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile:

“In the second year of King Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Yahweh came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua (Yehoshua) son of Jehozadak, the high priest: This is what Yahweh of hosts says: ‘These people say, “The time has not yet come for Yahweh's house to be built.”’ … Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of the people obeyed the voice of Yahweh their God and the message of the prophet Haggai, because Yahweh their God had sent him. And the people feared Yahweh. Then Haggai, Yahweh's messenger, gave this message of Yahweh to the people: ‘I am with you,’ declares Yahweh. So Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua (Yehoshua) son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of Yahweh of hosts, their God, on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of King Darius.” Haggai 1:1-2, 12-15

The inspired Scriptures further inform us that this high priest was also called Jeshua:

“Now Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the prophet, a descendant of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, who was over them. Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua (Yeshua) son of Jozadak set to work to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.” Ezra 5:1-2

This makes sense since, as we saw earlier, Jeshua (Yeshua) is the abbreviated form of Joshua (Yehoshua).

We, therefore, have an OT high priest whom God used to rebuild his temple whose name is Jesus!

{Note – See also the following references where the name Jeshua appears: 1 Chronicles 24:11; 2 Chronicles 31:15; Ezra 2:2, 6, 36, 40; 3:2, 8-9; 4:3; 8:33; 10:18; Nehemiah 3:19; 7:7, 11, 39, 43; 8:7; 9:5; 10:9; 11:26; 12:1, 7-8, 10, 24, 26.}

According to the prophetic writings this particular high priest and his friends were a sign or symbol of Yahweh’s Servant, the Branch, who was to come:

“Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your friends who sit before you, for they are men who are a sign: behold, I will bring my servant the Branch (tsemach). For behold, upon the stone which I have set before Joshua, upon a single stone with seven facets, I will engrave its inscription, says Yahweh of hosts, and I will remove the guilt of this land in a single day.” Zechariah 3:8-9

Yahweh further informs the prophet to place a crown of silver and gold on Joshua’s head since he is a type of the Branch to come:

“And the word of Yahweh came to me: ‘Take from the exiles Heldai, Tobi'jah, and Jedai'ah, who have arrived from Babylon; and go the same day to the house of Josi'ah, the son of Zephani'ah. Take from them silver and gold, and make a crown, and set it upon the head of Joshua, the son of Jehoz'adak, the high priest; and say to him, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘Behold, the man whose name is the Branch (tsemach): for he shall grow up in his place, and he shall build the temple of Yahweh. It is he who shall build the temple of Yahweh, and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule upon his throne. And he shall be a priest by his throne, and the counsel of peace will be between the two offices. And the crown shall be in the temple of Yahweh as a reminder to Heldai, Tobi'jah, Jedai'ah, and Josi'ah the son of Zephani'ah. And those who are far off shall come and help to build the temple of Yahweh; and you shall know that Yahweh of hosts has sent me to you. And this shall come to pass, if you will diligently obey the voice of Yahweh your God.’” Zechariah 6:9-15

Notice that Joshua is a royal priest or a high priest who rules, all of which is supposed to point to Yahweh’s Servant, the Branch! This means that the Branch will not only reign but will also function as a priest since he shall be the One who will build and establish God’s temple.

Again, this makes perfect sense since the Branch is a title applied to the Messiah, Son of David, He who comes to rule on David’s throne:

In that day the Branch (tsemach) of Yahweh shall be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land shall be the pride and glory of the survivors of Israel.” Isaiah 4:2

“There shall come forth a Shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a Branch (netser) shall grow out of his roots. And the Spirit of Yahweh shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of Yahweh. And his delight shall be in the fear of Yahweh. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall slay the wicked. Righteousness shall be the girdle of his waist, and faithfulness the girdle of his loins… In that day the Root of Jesse shall stand as an ensign to the peoples; him shall the nations seek, and his dwellings shall be glorious.” Isaiah 11:1-5, 10

{Note – Although these verses use two different words for Branch they are still synonymous, nonetheless, since they both refer to one and the same Person, namely the Son of David who comes to rule.}

“Behold, the days are coming, says Yahweh, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch (tsemach), and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘Yahweh our righteousness.’” Jeremiah 23:5-6 – cf. 33:15-16

In this last passage the Branch is not only a ruler but he is also called Yahweh our righteousness, a clear testimony to his Divine nature!

Moreover, David’s sons are said to have been priests:

“So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered justice and equity to all his people. And Jo'ab the son of Zeru'iah was over the army; and Jehosh'aphat the son of Ahi'lud was recorder; and Zadok the son of Ahi'tub and Ahim'elech the son of Abi'athar were priests; and Serai'ah was secretary; and Benai'ah the son of Jehoi'ada was over the Cher'ethites and the Pel'ethites; and David's sons were priests.” 2 Samuel 8:15-18

It should therefore come as no surprise that the Branch of David would also perform priestly duties.

Thus, the Davidic Branch shall be a priestly king or royal priest who will carry out specific priestly functions (such as making atonement) and build a temple for the worship of God.

Lo and behold this is precisely what the NT says concerning the Lord Jesus!

“Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called the uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands -- remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near in the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who has made us both one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law of commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; for through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; in whom you also are built into it for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.” Ephesians 2:11-22

“Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord.” Hebrews 8:1-2

“The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues for ever. Consequently he is able for all time to save those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. For it was fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, blameless, unstained, separated from sinners, exalted above the heavens. He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people; he did this once for all when he offered up himself. Indeed, the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect for ever.” Hebrews 7:23-28

"Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent which is set up not by man but by the Lord." Hebrews 8:1-2

“looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2

Conclusion

In our examination we have seen that Jesus’ name appears all throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, first as a name or title describing Yahweh’s role as Savior as well as the name of a high priest who was a sign of the Messiah to come. Therefore, if Muslims are going to apply their hermeneutic to the Holy Bible consistently they must accept that the inspired prophetic writings contain explicit prophecies of Jesus. They must further accept that the OT foreshadows Jesus’ coming and his role as Savior through the use of types and signs, e.g. OT persons and events which were deliberately designed or modeled by God to be a portrait of his beloved Son who was to come to redeem his people from their sins.

Amen! Come Yahweh Jesus, come! You are the eternal Son of God and risen Lord of glory, Yahweh God who became Jesus in order to save us from the wrath to come. We will always love and worship you, O Beloved of your Father and we your people! Amen.
