Criticism of Islam, the Quran, or Muhammad
Over the years, whenever people (Muslims or non-Muslims) criticize the Quran, insult Islam, or mock Muhammad (or there are rumors of such, whereas in fact there are no such things), in many places thousands of Muslims will carry out murderous threats, killings, destruction to deal with people that they think are related to such criticism and insult, especially Westerners or Christians.
Please note that Westerners are not necessarily Christians, and Christians are not necessarily Westerners. Moreover, usually the vast majority or even all of the victims of the Muslims' destruction are unrelated to those who did the criticism or insult.
The contents of such criticisms, insults and mockeries are partly true and partly false, and we do not completely agree or identify with the ways these criticisms, insults and mockeries are expressed.
However, there is no reason to hold that Islam (indeed all religions (including Christianity) and all kinds of doctrines, faiths, and ideologies) cannot be criticized or insulted. Freedom of speech should be protected.
The motives behind those who criticize or insult Islam, criticize the Quran, or mock Muhammad may be to express frustration that over the years, many Muslims, in the name of Islam, have been killing a large number of people (tens of millions) in accordance with the teachings of Islam and the Quran, and following the example of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.
On the relevant teachings of Islam and the acts and deeds of Muhammad, please read these sections in our web site: “Author’s notes” > “Is Islam peace”; “Muhammad” > “Conduct”; “Jihad” > “Islam”; “Ethics and living” > “Ethical issues in Islam”.
After Muhammad gained power, he killed or incited the killing of a number of those people who criticized or insulted him, e.g. Al-Nadr bin al-Harith – who wrote poems and told stories critiquing Muhammad; Uqba bin Abu Muayt – who harassed and mocked Muhammad in Mecca and wrote derogatory verses about him (Bukhari, volume 4, number 2934; Muslim, volume 3, numbers 4422, 4424); Asma bint Marwan – a poetess who wrote a poem satirizing Muhammad; Abu Afak – a 120-year-old Jew, who agitated his fellow Jews to question the prophethood of Muhammad, wrote satirical poetry, and sang satirical songs about him; Kab bin al-Ashraf – wrote a widely circulated poem, a hostile lament over the dead of Mecca (Bukhari volume 5, number 4037; Muslim volume 3, number 4436); a one-eyed Bedouin – sang a simple two-line song in defiance of Muslims and Islam; one of Abdullah bin Katal’s two singing-girls who sang songs satirizing him (Bukhari volume 4, 3044); Abu Jahl – who insulted Muhammad (Bukhari volume 4: 53: 369). Many of these events are recorded in “Sirat Rasulallah” by Ibn Ishaq (English translation: A. Guillaume's “The Life of Muhammad”).
Our website has presented detail factual descriptions of the truth about Islam, the Quran, and Muhammad. We will not use falsehood or exaggeration to criticize Islam, the Quran, and Muhammad. In fact, our website often cites detailed and numerous references to verses from the Quran, Islam's most authoritative Hadith, as well as historical literature written by early authoritative Muslim scholars in early Islam.
When some Christians or people who profess to be Christians insult Islam, criticize the Quran, or mock Muhammad, we will apply Christian standards and worldviews to assess their behavior. Christian standards of course are very high standards: they have to be honest, have pure motives, cannot lie or disregard the truth, and act in an attitude of love instead of hate, even to the extent of loving their enemies, and with peace and hope, not with anger or fear.
However, whether or not such insult of Islam, criticism of the Quran, or mockery of Muhammad was carried out by Christians and non-Christians (including Muslims), even if they are rash, bitter, or disrespectful, their “crime” is still not on the same plane as those thousands of Muslims who carry out threats, killings, riots, arson, and destruction. It should further be pointed out that it is hard to judge motives, as only God knows the heart.
Those thousands of Muslims are in fact carrying out threats, killings, riots, arson, and destruction according to Islamic standards. They are following the pattern set by Muhammad which is vengeance, and not the pattern of Jesus Christ which is love. The love shown in Jesus Christ’s verbal teachings and exemplified by His conduct is so much more attractive than the violent and hateful teachings advocated by the Quran and the Hadith and exemplified by Muhammad, as hatred will only breed more hatred.
We condemn the behavior of those thousands of Muslims who advocate using all means to stop people from criticizing Islamic practices and ideologies. These Islamic threats, killing, and destruction reflect the hateful and murderous ideology behind Islamic theology – which we oppose.
Some of the contents of such criticisms, insults and mockeries were taken from Islamic sources such as the Quran, Hadith or Sira (biographical information about Muhammad). However, the question is: why do Muslims feel offended by the criticisms, insults and mockeries, but not feel offended by the Quran, Hadith or Sira?
As Christians, we have seen the Bible being torn, defaced, teased and questioned (there are non-Christians and even Christians who do that), Jesus Christ being vilified and insulted, Christianity being criticized and mocked, and saintly Christians being teased. Although we are saddened by these, we do not feel the need to attack by force those who criticize, satirize, ridicule, tease, or insult. This is not because the Scriptures are wrong or Christianity is not credible, but because of the teachings of the Bible and the example of Jesus Christ. When Jesus Christ was on earth, He experienced hurt, vilification, insult, criticism, and ridicule. He was unfairly accused to the point that He was crucified on the cross. But He still loves and forgives those who have hurt Him because He not only overcomes death but also overcomes sin. He is the Son of God, living out the noble and perfect character of God.
Christianity is able to survive in the face of opposition just as Jesus Christ rose after being crucified.
Islam is based on lies built up with violence. Islam cannot tolerate criticism, satire, ridicule, teasing, or insult, neither because Islam is the true, good, and beautiful religion, nor because Allah needs Muslims to use force to defend and protect Him, but because the criticism, satire, and insult will shake the foundations of Islam, which is a system built by lies.
Muhammad asked his followers to destroy the cultures of or even annihilate non-Muslims, so that Islam would rule the world. (Muhammad said he had been ordered by Allah to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah (Bukhari 1: 25, 392, 393; 4: 52: 196)) The religious beliefs and teachings of Islam include lies, injustice, and darkness.
Criticizing Islam does not necessarily mean not loving Muslims. Indeed, criticism can be an act of love. In a person's life, God will correct him/her many times, rebuking him/her for his/her evil so that he/her does not perish in sin. God's love will not permit a person to continue in sin. In the Old Testament, God sent many true prophets to Israel to critique the kings, to counter the work of false prophets, and to correct the deeds of wicked priests. True prophets did not need to defend themselves with the sword. They knew that God could bring judgment on their enemies at just a word (2 Kings 1; 2:23-24).
For one thousand and four hundred years, Islam’s teachings on Jihad and other falsehood have been causing great harm to many people (including Muslims and non-Muslims), as a result of the Islamic belief that Allah orders them to follow the teachings of the Quran – and as exemplified by Muhammad – to fight against the unbelievers on behalf of Allah. (Surah 8: 12, 17, 38, 39; 9: 5, 29, 73, 123; 47: 4) However, the death of those who criticize Islam is not proof of their falsehood. The death of the righteous witness may, in fact, serve as evidence of his faithfulness in the face of false worldviews.
For those who dare to ask Muslims to reflect on and get a clear understanding of the truth about Islam, if their motive is a wish to prevent Muslims from continuing to be deceived by Islam, we will support that.
Our Lord Jesus Christ reminded the Pharisees in John 8:44:
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
Islam’s teachings include murder and lies.
Islam is in violation of the human rights of others.
If criticism of the Quran, insult of Islam, or mockery of Muhammad is prohibited, this will encourage (Islamic) religious totalitarianism and encourage Muslims to impose Sharia on everyone (all Muslims and all non-Muslims).
如果制訂法律將褻瀆伊斯蘭列為罪行，那麼按同樣的邏輯，應該禁制伊斯蘭教，請看「文章 160 P 為何制訂褻瀆法將禁制伊斯蘭」
If laws are formulated to criminalize blasphemy against Islam, then according to the same logic, Islam should be banned. Please read:
